What’s the difference between antique granite and sandstone cobblestone ?

We’re often asked about the difference between Historic European Cobblestone’s reclaimed “granite” and antique “sandstone” cobblestone. Both types of cobblestone are authentic reclaimed, antique (100-400 year old) cobble. Both have all of the character charm and the authentic worn patina found only by virtue of its historic age.

One of the main features of this collection of reclaimed antique cobblestone is the tremendous size options – more than you will find anywhere else! Granite and sandstone cobblestone is available in SIX sizes (3″-4″, 5″x5″, 6″x6″, 7″x7″, 4″x7″, 5″x8″) and both types can be sawn (bottom side) reducing the cobble to as thin as 1.5″ to  2” creating an antique paver for installation on a concrete base! However, there are historic stone quarries in Europe that are known for an extremely tight grained stone, as hard and durable as granite, yet different two  ways. We call this antique cobble sandstone – the name highlighting the beautiful warm colors.

The two main differences: color and surface/texture.

Different from traditional antique granite cobblestone, the color range of antique sandstone is extremely unique. While granite is known for natural colors in mostly warm grays, with some greens and rust colors, you’ll immediately notice sandstone cobblestone is more colorful and charming. With earthier warmer grays, and a higher percentage of browns and tans, this cobblestone provides a perfect palette to compliment many architectural styles. Secondly, reclaimed sandstone cobblestone has a relatively smooth and well-worn top offering a more foot-friendly surface. This makes it a very suitable choice for walkways and patios as well as driveways and motor courts. The surface appearance of old granite cobblestone has more character and ranges from slightly uneven to relatively flat.

A beautiful variety of authentic antique reclaimed granite and sandstone cobblestone can be found in the Historic European Cobblestone collection – great for any driveway, walkway, patio or just about any design imaginable!
